I promise not to go on endlessly about The Last Nightshift but...

As well as the Elbow track at the end, quite a few people have asked about my closing words on the programme. They were sent to me by Tony (from Fenham) and I decided, as soon as I read them, that they were unimprovable...

As you grow up, you learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will.
You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time.
You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.
You'll fight with your best friend.
You'll blame a new love for things an old one did.
You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love.
So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt - because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin!

Thankyou, Tony.

(The picture, by the way, is a time-lapse lighthouse photograph.)

That really is a beautiful lighthouse picture. My son's girlfriend has just been making me laugh. I was asking her how I could delete two names from my MSN messenger list of contacts, because they were people I had never heard of. She said, "You know that truck thing you go on, maybe it's people from on there." Truck thing!

Thought you might like to read this
- you do not have to take this quiz, just read it.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the X Factor.
4. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
5. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you get on?
The point is that none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their field but the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievments are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. Name three people who have taught you something worthwhile.
2. Name two friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3.List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
4.Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name a frazzled, haggard, not too overweight presenter who has made you smile a million times, and has shared with you his immense knowledge and his love of life.

Was that one easier?
The lesson is ... The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones who care.

p.s Hello to all Truckshunters
I met at the gathering on
Friday .... thank you for a
brilliant night.

Hi Ian,

I am going to buy the Elbow cd . 6 am is NOT the same without you!

Love Margaret x

Hi All,
Hildie, I love your comment and it's so true.
I'm also an Elbow fan, thanks to Ian introducing me to them. I amazed everyone at the pub quiz recently when I knew the winners of the Mercury award! You'll have to keep us up to date with your 'tips for the top' Ian. (I hear that The White Lies are the ones to watch at the moment) I like to surprise my son with my knowledge now and again!

Are you going to be on the 'air' somewhere else soon, Ian?

Hi folks,

Lovely to see a few more people on the blog. Please keep in touch.

I'm having a lovely holiday in Bowness and was pleased to learn that the hotel on site now has WiFi.

Ian, I love your photos, and I'm pleased you've posted Tony's verse.

Hildie, I love your comment too. It's most thought provoking.

Just wanted to add again how much I enjoyed the Truckshunters' get-together, and meeting up with some of the gang.

Mim, what have they got on the radio at 6a.m. now then?

Margaret, did you hear One Day Like Today being played in the background in a scene on Coronation Street tonight?

Anonymous, would you prefer us to call you Anon or Mr. Magoo? Hope you haven't got too much snow in Chopwell.

Maureen, I still keep having a giggle when I remember my son's girlfriend saying , "You know that truck thing you go on" .... what must she think I'm going on?!

Sid, I followed the instructions you gave Margaret and went onto youtube for the first time, it's wicked!

Vivienne, hope you have a good week over there and hope you've got your wellies with you!

Ellie, you must have to travel a long way to the office if you're up at half past five.

Loz, did you get much piano tuning done in the snow, or did you just breakfast with Ian?

Lawrence said...

Hi Hildie,

Yeah battled on regardless - 6 tunings done today in the snow at Prudhoe, Crawcrook and Fenham with only only tiny slippery hitch.

Takes more than a flake of snow to stop the pony express and me :-) lol

Tonight I see it's pouring with rain, due to higher temperatures than expected and the snow is melting profusely... watch out for flooding now.

I wonder if Paul still has his jet ski..... I may need it tomorrow with the amount of water out there.

Morning everyone,
Hilde, I get up every working day at 5am (sometimes just before then) as I have 4 very important feline persons (William, Muldoon, Tiffin and Bisto) to see to before I start getting me ready for the office (and that involves major work)- hence I miss Ian (and Laurence) stimulating the old brain and helping to make me human for the day! Laurence's skill includes tuning humans too! Mornings are now boring to say the least. I don't have very far to travel - about 12 miles - 20mins.

Hello everyone.
That's a great photo Ian. Did you know its the Pigeon Point Lighthouse, situated 50 miles south of San Francisco. A hostel exists in the restored lighthouse keepers quarters. You can stay there from as little as $20 per night.
The photo is credited to someone known as 'Mumbley Joe'.

Hi Gang!

I can't believe that all the snow we had yesterday disappeared overnight! We've had a lovely sunny, very cold Spring day, today.
I don't need the wellies today, Hildie.

Hi everyone!
When I looked out of my window this morning I had a feeling it was April Fool'S Day ... it was like the weatherman had played a trick on us all. I live on a main road .... all the people who live along the lane beside me had parked their cars on the main road last night, obviously believing they would have been snowed in this morning. Of course, they weren't! Honestly, if you'd seen the number of cars parked outside my house, you would have thought I'd been having an all-night party!

So that solves that mystery, Ellie!
Now we know why you are up and about so early in the morning!
And, Sid, that was great detective work! I like the sound of Mumbley Joe, he'd be good to have on the blog!

Hildie...our fellow shunters are quite right; those quizzes are ecellent and just about say it all. Thought-provoking stuff. And you're quite right about Sid, too. That was truly awesome detective work he did on the lighthouse photo. HOW did he find all that out, though??
As for Mr Magoo's question...don't hold your breath. I'm sorry to say that it's highly unlikely that any broadcaster would want anyone like me - a bit of old rough trade from Easington (not to put too fine a point on it)...
Lawrence...I'm off to London for a few days from Thursday (but I WILL be blogging from there)...I get back next Monday...when is our next early morning breakfast at the 'greasy spoon' on Motorbike Hill due?
And - to ask a question I never got round to asking on-air - how long has Newcastle's Westgate Hill been a centre for motorcycle enthusiasts?

Hi all.....

Hi Ian,

Tuesday next week (Feb 10th)at 8am is the next motorbike brekka in my diary if that's ok with you.

Hi Elli,

Thanks for the comments, and as for me tuning people too, I'm so delighted it came over as stimulating to you as I really am a night person....and.... well here's my secret procedure (as in Ian's recently) for a live TX.

In order to get up in time and leave my Cramlington home at 5am I got back from work and grabbed an hour or two's sleep up until 2am... then up!! Had i slept past 2.30am I'd never have woken in time.

So I have seen very many editions of Eggheads re-runs on Challenge +1 between 4 and 5a, before jumping into the freezing car at 5.

I like to get to places in good time when there is a real deadline at stake, so it's arrive at either Ian's doorstep (oh those aching cheeks) or the Pink palace car park at 5.20am.

The.... it's as Ian's really but more watching and learing with a little pre-reading of daft stuff I'd printed off, and then LIVE....somehow actually sounding well awake...(I wasn't honest), but it's the adrenal glandular rush that does that and gives you a terrible dry throat. The coffee was a Godsend.

Then breakfast (having left work in the dark.... felt like 6pm - weird) then up to my mum's in Fenham to check tuning schedule, doze for 45 minutes...then off to work but I always had to grab a snooze mid afternoon too.

So if I sounded wide awake... it was all an act lol.

Ill get the list of Doorstep's done on here soon.

Hello, Lawrence
May I ask a very special favour of you, please. You are a close friend of Ian and I need you to please take him to one side and explain that, contrary to his lack of confidence, his talent and skills as a broadcaster are exceptional. Now, it may be his belief that no one would want 'anyone like me - a bit of old rough trade from Easington' but please sit Ian down and drum it in that he is the OPPOSITE - and we won't hear anyone put him down, even himself!!
Please will you do that for me, Lawrence?
I'm impressed by your schedule, you're a minor tornado, rushing around so, then calmly and authoratively presenting such fascinating facts.
Hope all goes well telling the Laird off...........x x

lol Ellie I'll see what I can do, once I;ve chased away this gastric flu.... missed my first day of work through illness today for 8 years or more

Oh dear, I sorry you are poorly, Lawrence - I hope you get over the flu quickly. Its a nasty bug that's going round. Take Care and drink gallons of water......
Let us all know when you feeling better, please
