IN ALL MY GLORY
Since I started this blog at the beginning of November, absolutely no-one at all has asked me to post a picture of myself on it. Ever mindful of public opinion, I have therefore added the photograph you see below right. It was taken on the ‘bucking bronco’ at the Sunderland Air Show two years ago. Needless to say, Paul was wearing a brand new shirt and therefore couldn’t possibly have a go himself. He is standing out-of-shot selling tickets. The photograph is available as a child-scarer and nightmare-defence for a small fee, payable to my therapist.

RECENT CONTACTS
Ever since I took over the new-style Nightshift in August I have been receiving a fairly constant stream of emails, texts and calls about my new role at the BBC. Many of you have told me how much you enjoyed the ‘Paul and Ian’ programme, especially in its Big Blue Bus format, and how much you miss me (and Paul, too) on the daytime schedules. Naturally, I’m extremely flattered by your comments and it’s undoubtedly very kind of you to make them and go to the trouble of sending them to me. Others, though, go a step further, suggesting that I must feel sidelined or humiliated to have been ‘shunted onto the graveyard shift’ (as more than one listener put it) so perhaps it’s about time I cleared a few things up....
Firstly, whatever the BBC’s motives were in allotting me The Nightshift, they couldn’t have done me a greater favour. I hope that, by now, you realise that I enjoy it thoroughly. I research, produce and present it myself - which is, on its own, an immensely rewarding experience - and I have made many new friends amongst the programme’s loyal and (I hope) growing audience.
Secondly, please remember that BBC Radio Newcastle has changed and moved on from Paul and Ian’s Blue Bus days. Our two new daytime presenters - Jonathan Miles and Alfie Joey - are, each in their own way, strong and personable presenters taking over roles which cannot have been easy for them - and doing a marvellous job too!
Thirdly, remember also that Paul resigned of his own accord. I am in frequent contact with him, as you would expect, and I can assure you that he is a happy and contented man.
And so am I.
So once again, thanks for all your flattering and complimentary contacts about the past. This, though, is the time of year when we concentrate very much on the present and - in particular - on the future. I sincerely believe that Jonathan, Alfie and everyone else at the station is working hard to bring you the very best that BBC local radio has to offer the north-east - and I believe they are succeeding brilliantly.
End of subject?

FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK

i agree ian,... jon n alfie are brill presenters, and after all jon came up from the south prob not knowing anyone yet he fitted in perfectly..and alfie sounds like some one who could live next door..a north east lad..i emailed bbc tyne and told them this too....
i think everyone needs positive feedback if they are doing a good job, it doesnt take much..a few seconds, just a word or two, it gives confidence which makes even better presenters which we listeners benefit from in the long run..the blue bus morning prog did visit some lovely places but life moves on.. we love to hear you on truckshunters and you are happy so everythings good..

Good pic Ian, fancy a try on a real bull?

Maybe not.

Any how, again have to agree, no matter how much we enjoy something it has to change at some point otherwise evolution will see it suffer by natural decay.

Radio stations and personel have to change for the same reasons and we as listeners have to be flexible.

I've been an avid BBC Radio Newcastle listener for donkeys years now and naturally adored the Blue Bus show with yourself and Paul, and Julia's show and Paul's Saturday morning show of which you were an integeral part.

Having taken part in 13 Who Knows Wins Quizzes your hilarious rolls are etched in my memory - especially the time your headphone plug got stuck .. with the mic still open... that WAS funny, but that came to an end, as has the Blue Bus and indeed the Paul and Ian on-air partnership - disapoiting, yes,and a massive miss on the airwaves - yes but C' est la vie, the times they are a-changing and BBC Radio Newcastle must evolve or lose ground rapidly.

I adore Jonathan Miles' new show and have had to pull over in the car as many times as I had to for Paul and Ian due to moments of crazy comedy that are not condusive to good motoring.

Alfie Joey does a good job, does it well, although his style doesn't suit my ear so I tend not to listen, but that doesn't make him a bad presener nor is it a crticism of him, it's just one of those clashes you have in life.

As for you on the Nightshift.... excellent! With you beng on-air at this time it means I can listen to a huge chunk of your show instead of catching 10 minutes here and 20 there as I drive from call to call through the day's work, so I can now enjoy your local knowledge and various fascinating facts and figures more than ever.... which is very good!

Interaction with the Nighshift is easier as email reaction from me is instant, and of course there's this top blog as well which is another excellent development adding that extra dimension to the show, so it's a big step foreward to my way of thinking.

Glad Paul's doing good things too and all the best to the bloke.

So.... time moves on and so must we, here's to a bright new and different future to you and yours - here's hopng the nightshift goes on for many, many years to come and let's enjoy the future output from Radio Newcastle, The BBC for the North East!

Oh! and yes I can see the sense in that station ident too.

Cheers

Loz.
